. >> pelley: the manhunt goes on john, thank you very much. the man who president obama wants to head the central intelligence agency had his senate corn firmation hearing today. john brennan's ceremony was interrupted several times by protesters who object to u.s. drone strikes overseas. brennan was the architect of that program. among those killed by the strikes was an american citizen who was a member of al qaeda in yemen. bob orr followed the hearing today. >> reporter: as president obama's top counter-terrorism adviser, john brennan has overseen a five-fold increase in drone strikes against suspected terrorists. brennan today told the senate intelligence committee those strikes are critical for national security, but brennan said he'd rather capture terrorists than kill them. >> we only take such actions as a last resort to save lives when there's no other alternative to taking an action that's going to mitigate that threat. >> reporter: brennan defended a policy permitting americans to be targeted if they're actively plotting with al qaeda. orgong senator ron wyden objected. >> it's

, thank you. on that afghanistan announcement, there are 66,000 americans fighting there tonight. mr. obama intends to bring home 34,000 of them by this time next year. most u.s. combat troops are due home by the end of 2014. charlie d'agata is at our afghan bureau in the capital kabul and, charlie, i wonder, what is this going to mean to the troops on the ground? >> reporter: well, the key question, scott, is the time frame. any commanders here will tell you that they want as many boots on the ground for as long as they can, certainly through the summer and the fall when the fighting picks up against the taliban. and there's a lot of work to be done, especially along eastern afghanistan where insurgents have been infiltrating from safe havens in pakistan. they're holding territory there. they're launching attacks here in kabul. u.s. troops are also focused on the south around kandahar, the birthplace of the taliban. now, it's been announced that the afghans will be taking the lead in the spring. but what we've seen for ourselves is u.s. forces fighting right alongside them providing
